Here are my thoughts before I made the first trip of "discovery".
I first got serious about setting up an off-grid homestead in July of this year.
To take a few steps back, I first started looking at what most people would call a "normal" home / living situation. Normal "brick & mortar" or "stick & nail" structures. But I quickly found out those were out of the question for me. What I wanted to live in I couldn't afford. And what I could afford, I wouldn't want to live in.
Besides that, one of my goals was to have no major ongoing monthly obligations. A "normal" house does not fit that requirement.
That's when I decided to go "off-grid". Once I get things set up, other than property taxes (which I'm sure will be very acceptable), I will have no house payments. Nice. Also, I like working with my hands and this will allow me to do that to my heart's content.
I didn't keep strict records of every trip of "discovery" I made prior to finding the property I decided to buy, but there were at least four. I even made offers on two properties before I made a trip to verify whether or not I could drive my low clearance sedan onto the property to inspect them. No more of that.
I came to find out the lower priced properties were priced that way for a reason (or reasons). They were either farther away from town and/or required 4 wheel drive vehicles to get to them. I wanted a property that was 5 acres or more, but I quickly had to change my target to 1 or 2 acres.
